Two different portraits on 1899 Russian gold 10 Roubles?
Hi everyone,
I inherited these two 1899 Russian gold 10 Rouble coins of Nicholas II from family in Northern Norway.
I recently noticed that the portraits look surprisingly different from each other, especially the hair, beard and facial details. One coin looks much sharper and more detailed, while the other has a smoother looking portrait.
I’ve been trying to learn more about possible die or portrait varieties, including the so-called “large head” versions, but I’m still confused.
Mint marks are:
АГ
ФЗ
The coins also have edge lettering and family history connected to Pomor trade between Northern Russia and Northern Norway around the early 1900s.
Do these differences look normal to experienced collectors, or could they represent different portrait varieties/dies?
I’d also be interested in hearing whether either coin appears more collectible or valuable than the other.
Thanks for any opinions or guidance.
