Becoming an ESL teacher in NJ

I currently teach elementary as an interventionist. I’m looking at getting an ESL cert as I’ve been laid off and want more options for my job search. The steps look pretty clear, but I want some input from people who have done the process.

  1. I was an alternate route teacher when I started. I got my CE and did the two years of courses. I’m assuming I get to skip this step. I need to take the WPT and OPT. I’ve read there is a way to skip one of these tests. Is this true?

  2. After getting hired with a CE in ESL, it looks like I need 15 credits (I’ll likely use Rutgers unless someone can suggest a cheaper option here). How difficult are these courses? The alternate route teaching courses weren’t difficult, but they were an extra burden on top of the work I already had to do.

  3. What is the job market like for an ESL teacher looking for a public school job? My district lost there ESL teacher, and it took a long time to find another. The one they found left quickly without giving their 60 days because the school is a joke. Will I be able to negotiate my steps?

Thank you for any advice!
