Can’t we just use a different adapter and dvd drive in the iMac g3 instead of the standard slot loading one?

My dvd player!
So I have this dvd player hooked up to my crt and it plays DVDs just fine, but when I burn a dvd rw it can’t play the video. It opens fine and it can detect the formats but it can’t play it!

Are there any modern laptops that look like this?
This is a dell inspiron 1501, I love how it looks and feels and I would like to have a modern laptop that looks like this and has all the ports! The ports are Ethernet, 4 USB A ports, vga out (would prefer hdmi but vga is fine), mic in and line out and a optical drive. I also like replaceable ram and battery!
