I recently took my CRV for an oil change after having the car for 2,700 kms or 1,800 miles. I bought this car with 96000 kilometers or 60,000 miles on the odometer. While buying it the Honda authorized dealership told me that they will service the car before the delivery. They supplied me with the invoice of using 5L 5W20 oil.

A couple of weeks ago I was checking the dip stick and found that the oil was a bit too dark for its age. The oil was also looking a bit diluted. To alleviate my concerns, I took the car for an oil change this morning.

I made the dealership servicing the car to change the oil to 5W30 fully synthetic even when the recommended is 0W20. My reason:

  1. It is thicker at higher temperature providing better lubrication.
  2. Being thicker it is more resistant to dilution.
  3. The car is entering or has entered the mid mileage range now.

Do you think it is a rational decision to move to 5W30 from 0W20?
