Is this a cut or infection?

I thought he got cut somehow a week ago, but it hasn’t really gotten a whole lot better since then.

I don’t know what he could have cut himself on in the tank. I’ve had him for almost a year in the same tank with no changes and he’s never even torn a fin. And getting these pictures with him turned to the side I’m noticing that the area looks a little fuzzy.

If anyone could help me out I would really appreciate it! I have medicine for treating infections but I don’t want to use anything unless I know for sure I need to.
