Interview about long-form piano improvisation and why classical pianists rarely improvise.
I was recently interviewed by No Dead Guys about Origin, a long-form solo piano improvisation I recorded in one take.
One part of the discussion that may be relevant here is the question of why classically trained pianists so rarely improvise. My own view is that classical training gives us extraordinary tools — harmony, voice leading, form, touch, control — but those tools are often directed almost entirely toward interpretation rather than spontaneous creation.
I’d be interested in hearing from other pianists: were you encouraged to improvise as part of your training, or did that feel separate from “serious” piano study?
