ما معنى هذه السلسلة حيث يوجد فعل "كان"، ثم "قد" واخيرا فعل اخر؟

In case i expressed myself incorrectly in arabic, what would be the equivalent in english to this structure where you find the verb "kana", then the particle "qad" and then another verb, as in the sentence i underlined in red? Thanks you
