2019 Hilux 2.8 Update — Possible Injector Issues at 75,000kms?
Quick update on the 2019 Hilux situation for everyone who commented/gave advice earlier.
After spending more time with the truck, I’m starting to think there may actually be injector-related issues developing.
For context, this is the 2.8 1GD Hilux with around 75,000 kms. No DPF or AdBlue. The truck wasn’t abused or worked excessively hard, but maintenance definitely wasn’t ideal before I got it. It also just spent over 3 months at a body shop where it was mostly just being started, moved around, and shut back off without really being driven long enough to properly warm up.
The first thing I did after taking over the truck was a full service immediately, engine oil, all filters, everything. While checking it over, the mechanic mentioned the injector spray patterns appeared irregular, but they don’t handle injector calibration/testing in-house so they recommended I take it to a proper diesel specialist.
Compared to my old 2023 Hilux, this one:
vibrates noticeably at idle (in and out of gear)
feels significantly slower, especially at higher RPM
seems to be burning a lot more diesel than expected
and oddly gets up to operating temperature much quicker than my newer truck did
At first I thought it may have been engine mounts (due to vibration), but now I’m leaning more toward injectors/fueling.
A diesel specialist recommended I take the injectors to be serviced and calibrated, which I’m probably going to do. I’ve also been advised to check injector feedback values and basically establish a clean baseline mechanically now so I know exactly where the truck stands moving forward.
I’m still committed to getting the truck back to top shape because overall I genuinely like it.
For those experienced with the 1GD platform:
have you seen injector issues this early?
can excessive idling/poor maintenance accelerate it that much?
and would you service/calibrate the injectors first or just replace them entirely and move on?
