I am 27 M from Toronto and I’ve been feeling v unsure of my life since I’ve been laid off a couple months ago. Last 5 years worked union highrise construction and hated it. I got sucked in at a young age staring at the shiny “$40 an hour”. Fast forward now I’ve been laid off a couple months ago and while I have the chance I want to career change. I’ve always been interested in tech as broad as that word is but i feel like construction makes you feel stuck.
To stop rambling I’ve picked a few areas I find interesting. IT, cybersecurity, data science, SWE and trust me I get it. I’ve heard how saturated and dead the job market is for tech.. but is it impossible?.. my worries now come from is this even possible for someone in my position? Do these fields hire without degrees? Are any of these fields a write off? I’ve heard all about compTIA and all those certs but I always see job experience along with these certs are required and I can’t see how with my background anyone would hire me for anything before or even after certs I didn’t go to school so I don’t have any internship experience either. I’m stuck and I don’t know how to move forward I don’t know what possible in my position or did I waste my early 20s with a hammer. I’m decided to not having to go back to blue collar I just need a little help in the right direction. I’m hoping if anyone has any general advice or advice from anyone in the same field that wouldn’t mind sharing words of knowledge with me that would be appreciated. Hard truths and no sugar coating always appreciated.
