Depictions of suicide that neither glamorize it nor turn it into something overly melodramatic or for shock factor, but rather portray it in a more intimate, realistic, tragic, and complex way.
Aftersun (2022)
The most popular and likely interpretation is that the entire film is about the final moments a father spends with his daughter before taking his own life, hoping to leave her with fond memories of himself through their vacation in Turkey. Throughout the film, we see subtle and not-so-subtle signs of Calum’s depression and what he plans to do, from the scene where he cries over a farewell letter to his daughter, his reaction to her comments about feeling empty at times despite having good days, his fear of having passed his depression on to her, his drunken episode on the beach, the scene on the balcony, his purchase of an expensive Turkish rug to give her something material to take with her despite not being in a good financial situation, etc.
The entire film as shown at the end, is Sophie watching the videos from the trip, remembering the last moments she spent with her father, and from the viewer’s perspective, realizing alongside her the signs she overlooked in her childhood that foreshadowed what was to come.
House (2004)
This example was driven more by the need to write off the character more thanh anything else, but the fact that it was so sudden adds a lot to it, and the way they handled it in the episode itself was masterful.
Throughout his time on screen, Kutner never showed to the viewers or the characters any signs of depression; he always came across as the nicest person in House new team in my opinion; his death is sudden, without warning, and without any apparent explanation that can be immediately linked to it, causing House to spend the entire episode searching for reasons or reasonable explanations as to why someone like Kutner would commit such an act, causing harm to those around him (his colleagues and Kutner own adoptive family) only to end up with nothing.
Sometimes, there's simply is no rational or simple answer.
