This week's Nation Grid discussion.

So, my problem with my meter (go to my profile and search comments for "meter") have been well-documented here. I just received my latest NG bill, and my budget plan, which was $203 most of last year, and after the new electric meter, was adjusted to $298 after being charged $73 the previous month. I am now billed $298 but am informed that my budget plan amount is now $431, making NG my single biggest household expense. No, my utility use has not changed, other than this winter was colder than normal. The email from NG this week claims my gas usage (not cost) is projected to be 49% higher than this period last year.

Anyhow, I can't document all the shenanigans here. I'm going to call NG and ask them to review my account. Does anybody have any advice on what I can do if they don't fix it? Buy the PSC a luncheon buffet? Call my representative?

As advice to anybody getting their new "smart meter" installed, TAKE PHOTOS BEFORE AND AFTER and download pdfs of your last year's bills.

My six months of bills from July after my meter was replaced, to February of this year, have disappeared from the NG website.

TL;DR: Scammers are using previous bank security breaches to dupe victims.

Article at: https://www.syracuse.com/news/2026/05/state-police-intercept-payment-save-upstate-ny-resident-from-losing-10000-to-a-scammer.html

Posting this partly because it shows that sometimes it is possible to recover funds, and partly because they don't answer a number of questions:

  1. Was this a cold call? To people in the area of the bank that was compromised? Or did the scammers know this was a customer?

  2. They intercepted the payment. That's nice, but what about the addressee? If this was narcotics, they would have an undercover officer deliver the package, get it signed for, and arrest them.

  3. The addressee was likely a money mule, who would have forwarded the money to the actual scammer via untraceable means. Still, arresting the mule removes an asset from the scammer, and some kind of consequences may serve as a deterrent to others that might get involved in sketchy activities. Even probation, a fine and six months of giving lectures on how they got involved and how it messed up their lives would satisfy me.

  4. If they are monitoring the addressee, why publicize this now? Why not wait until other scams are foiled or the addressee is in custody>

Anyhow, with luck the publicity will save some other potential victims. And respect to the victim for going public.
