Hello everyone! I'm an Australian woman who will be coming to Hyderabad for a wedding in July. This is my first time coming to India, so I'm really excited but also a bit nervous! I'm coming as my Sri Lankan boyfriend's plus one and I don't know any of the women coming, aside from the bride but I don't know her too well and definitely don't want to bother her with a million questions when she probably has more than enough on her plate.
So, what is acceptable for a foreigner to wear to a muslim wedding in Hyd? I know I could probably skip the headstress and wear a western dress, but I can wear that anytime and if a saree or lehenga is appropriate, I'd rather go with that if possible. We're landing in Hyd about 3-4 days before the sangeet and ceremony - does this timeline even allow for any tailoring and can someone recommend where I could get this done?
Some more questions from an excited but overthinking tourist to be:
- what is the most common language spoken and what are some basic phrases I could learn?
- any do's and don'ts for the wedding or customs I should know?
- anything else I might need to know ahead of time? Good places to eat or shop, things to do in down time, etc
