We had a bat lying on the bottom of our fireplace yesterday. He looked an inch away from death. Please, no judging for the next part: my spouse put on long gloves and we were going to nudge him into an enclosed container and bring him outside in hopes he wouldn't actually die. Predictably, he was pretty pissed and hissed at us. No bites, and per the experts we called, we left him alone and he flew out the way he came in.

They specialist came out, confirmed he was gone, inspected the chimney, and made a bat-exit friendly repair.

Question is, do we need to be vaccinated? Spouse says um, no. But we also had a bat flying around our house (not enclosed in a fireplace) about 2 years ago and I read something about dormant rabies. Should we have preventative shots and, if so, where? We weren't bit so not an emergency.

Also...two cats were in the room but nowhere near the enclosed bat.

Advice? Trying to be calm and rational.

ETA: I've been looking all this up online and am not finding the clearest of info.
