Can I unclog my house drain myself?

Can I unclog my house drain myself?

I'm a not handy dumbass but can follow a tutorial. It is NOT CURRENTLY CLOGGED.

The U trap was clogged last month, and I had some yummy sewer water back up into my basement. The plumber came out and unclogged it, said he sees them clog all the time, and that it would happen again. Recommended I replace the trap with just a straight pipe ($10k). Connected to city sewer.

I would like to be able to unclog this myself if it happens again, it seemed fairly straightforward. I've been on the hunt for a guide or YouTube video to unclog this type of setup but haven't had luck.

It seems like the only tools I need are a wrench and a drain auger (thinking a Ryobi cordless one).

Is it as simple as - shut off water main into house - screw off the caps (city side first) - use auger to try and unclog? This is located in my garage right next to the garage door.

North Albany, Albany, New York

All photos by me, taken in the North Albany area of Albany over the last few months.

The second image is what I considered North Albany for this project - the area within the city of Albany north of Interstate 90 and east of Route 9.
