I understand Garth not having contact with June, but how would he not at least know who she was?

Especially considering we learn his father was one of the commanders poisoned at the jezebels...

I imagine June is considered an enemy of the state, poisoned his father, and he is now the guardian for her daughter. June made it very clear she would never stop trying to get Hannah. So even if he doesn't know her through May Day, you would think he would be aware of the continued threat that June represents to Gilead?
