If you could early surrender vs an A but the count was at a point that is profitable, which option would you take?

I’m having trouble when this situation happens, I mostly surrender my 15 or 16 and insure 12-14 but I don’t know if it’s correct.

The rules are 6D, S17 if it matters.

What is the advantage that this specific rule gives to the player? Its almost OBBO but only against an A, if the dealer has blackjack with a T up you lose splits and doubles.
