I’m in kinda a tricky situation, and it’ll require some context so stay with me yall. I’m in CA, I was gifted a Prius from a friend back in august, the car has issues with the battery which is why she gave it to me for free. Said I can take it and try to get it fixed. We filled out the pink slip, me as the buyer and her as the seller.
I went on my merry way and tried to get it registered. But i needed a recent smog to get it registered. So they gave me a paper that said “incomplete registration- needs a smog” and told me to come back with a smog record. I go get it smogged and it doesn’t pass due to the battery issues (hybrid battery btw). So I assume it’s legally in my name, just not registered. I think.
Fast forward to now and I’m tired of putting money into it and just decide to sell it to pebble(company that buys junk cars and will even pick it up) they said I just need to have the pink slip so they can fill out the buyer section. Except the one I have is already filled out . So I need a transfer of title? But the only form I’m finding on the dmv website is “application for replacement or transfer of title” which has me fill out sections that state that the original title is damages or lost. Which it’s not (is that considered the pink slip? Or is it the registration?) do I need to have it registered under my name to sell it? How can I get it registered if it won’t pass smog? What form do I need? I don’t even know if the car is in my name at this point I’m just so lost.
I’m so very confused guys. I just went to get rid of this freaking car. Any advice helps, they’re picking it up in a few days
