Running SEO audits across small-to-mid size sites and one pattern keeps showing up:

Sites with 5k–30k monthly organic visits, stable top-10 rankings failing Core Web Vitals badly. LCP above 4s, INP failing on mobile. And still outranking technically cleaner competitors.

A few observations:

  • CWV correlation with rankings looks weak at this tier backlinks and topical authority seem to dominate
  • Almost every site passes on desktop, fails on mobile yet Google is mobile-first
  • The gap between position 4 and position 7 sites on CWV is often massive, but rankings don't reflect it

Has anyone run controlled tests on this and actually seen ranking movement after fixing CWV? Wondering if this is niche-specific or a wider pattern.
