For context- Shane is an Asian-Canadian character. In canon, he doesn’t die, he’s just injured (my fic is a MCD fic). Canonically, Ilya is his secret boyfriend. At the point in the story where Shane non-canonically dies, they have not come out yet. Ofc, in canon the story goes on with the pair of them, they tell Shane’s parents (Ilya is Russian and both his parents are dead) who accept them fully and welcome Ilya into their family.
I kept Ilya being welcomed into Shane’s family, and had him win the Stanley Cup (they’re both ice hockey players) twice, dedicating each win to Shane and his late mother.
My story was intended as a ‘what if’, not in any way racist. Have I done that anyway, and not realised? I’m currently writing a version where Ilya dies (on a separate occasion later in the story). I had both ideas, I just wrote Shane’s first, so it was never intended to be racist at all. Have I done something wrong here?
