Are cordless vacuums as powerful as traditional vacuums when it comes to tricky corners and thick carpets?

I love the idea of a cordless vacuum because it is lightweight and easy to move and there is no cord to trip over. My old upright vacuum is very powerful and can basically eat a carpet in one pass, but it is so heavy and awkward that I avoid cleaning under furniture and tight corners.

Has anyone here switched to cordless and found it actually handles those hard to reach spots? I have a mix of thick rugs and low-clearance furniture and I do not want to end up doing extra passes or missing half the dirt. Tricks, hacks, or any warnings would be helpful because I am trying to save my back and keep my floors clean.
