I’m currently working on a VTOL aircraft project, and I ran into something I’m not fully sure about.

I got a drone from someone to salvage parts from it, and the motors it came with are designed for self-tightening (screw-on) propellers. So the props just thread directly onto the motor shaft and tighten as they spin.

From what I understand, those props are meant to spin in a specific direction so they stay tight, and spinning them the opposite way could loosen them.

Now here’s where I’m confused:

For my VTOL setup, I’ll likely need a pusher configuration (motor at the back) for forward flight. That might mean reversing motor direction depending on how things are mounted.

So my questions are:

  • Can self-tightening props be safely used in a pusher configuration?
  • If I reverse the motor direction to get proper thrust, won’t the prop just unscrew itself?
  • Is there a correct way to orient/setup these so they still tighten properly?
  • Or is it just better to switch to standard props with a shaft + nut for this kind of build?

Would really appreciate any advice, especially from people who’ve tried something similar.
