I'm starting at a V20 this summer as a transactional summer associate, but I'm seriously considering deferring to clerk for a year.
A few questions for anyone who's done this or knows someone who has:
- Did your firm pay the clerkship bonus and give you a year of class credit, or is that pretty much a litigation-only thing?
- If no bonus or credit, did they at least hold your spot so you could come back into the same group?
- Did clerking hurt or help you at all on the transactional side once you started?
For context, I'm pretty confident I want to be a transactional lawyer long term. I'm not flirting with switching to lit and, from what I understand, it will be hard to switch at this point. But I still really do want to clerk for a year (looking to do litigation pro bono work).
