I'm starting at a V20 this summer as a transactional summer associate, but I'm seriously considering deferring to clerk for a year.

A few questions for anyone who's done this or knows someone who has:

  1. Did your firm pay the clerkship bonus and give you a year of class credit, or is that pretty much a litigation-only thing?
  2. If no bonus or credit, did they at least hold your spot so you could come back into the same group?
  3. Did clerking hurt or help you at all on the transactional side once you started?

For context, I'm pretty confident I want to be a transactional lawyer long term. I'm not flirting with switching to lit and, from what I understand, it will be hard to switch at this point. But I still really do want to clerk for a year (looking to do litigation pro bono work).
