I'm a DIYer having a garage/workshop built and I want to add a trellis over the 9' garage doors, similar to the one in the photo -- I'm still working on my own design but this photo I found should give you an idea.
I like the idea of using 4"x8" cedar for the long horizontal beams but I'm concerned about possible bowing or twisting over the 10'-ish spans. Should I be concerned and if so, any suggestions on preventing that?
Is there anything special about mounting the beam to the corbels?
I've considered making custom U-saddles and welding flitch plates (or a knife plate) to those to stiffen it, but is that overkill? I'm a hobbyist welder and willing to fabricate these if I need to but off-the-shelf would be convenient. I also don't mind exposed hardware (gussets, whatever).
One suggestion I found was to fasten the center rafter tails to the wall studs, which would provide support from above and sounds like it would work. I'd like to solve the problem at the corbels if possible though.
Thanks, any advice is appreciated.
