Ambergris Caye - self-guided mangrove kayaking

Hello! My boyfriend and I are planning a trip to Belize in July; we will be spending 3 days in San Ignacio and 4 days in San Pedro. On Ambergris Caye, we are interested in doing a kayak rental. I understand that a guide is recommended for safety if kayaking out to the reefs, but we are interested in staying along the shore to look at mangroves. I haven't been able to find much information about this online so I guess I have a couple questions:

  1. Is it possible to rent a kayak in San Pedro and explore mangroves on your own?

  2. Where is a good spot on Ambergris to see mangroves?

I found a mangrove kayak tour in Caye Caulker as a last resort, but I'm open to any suggestions for mangrove viewing options on Ambergris, even if it is on a walking trail or something like that!

One additional question regarding sargassum - I know it is hard to predict if there will be heavy accumulation, but are Secret Beach and snorkeling tours a good way to avoid it if it happens to be bad?
