Currently working in Corp Dev from a non IB background at F500 company in Texas. Went to a respected university but wasn’t sold on M&A until a few years in the professional world. I got into Corp dev by just improving my overall skills, networking and grinding on applications in my free time I’d say. Recently I’ve been approached by a few boutiques banks and other corporate development recruiters and frankly I’d like to go to a larger firm/get more exposure. My concern is that I don’t have all the skills. Of course I use excel and ppt everyday and largely just improved with a course and learning on the job. That said, I’ve never had to build an actual model from scratch. I’ve done it once or twice years ago but of all the finance groups I’ve been with, they’re already built out, just modify them. Even friends in IB and PE says it’s somewhat rare and ones in MBA are utilizing AI to build out models (of course you need to know excel and theory, that’s no a concern at all) Any thoughts on this? Should I be ready to build a 3 statement in 2 hours live during an interview?
