How can I grow my DECA chapter and get more competitive?Coming from a SoCal Deca Sophmore

My chapter struggles because our adviser also runs a separate business program, so he's extremely busy and relies on students to handle everything — leaving members confused and missing out on opportunities that chapters like Washington High School, Lynbrook, and all of them seem to have figured out with really good advisors who have so much DECA experience (I'm so jealous).

Our chapter does go to DECA competitions fully funded by our private school, which is great, but it limits how much we can expand since the school controls the budget. When we've suggested fundraising to grow, our adviser says it'll mess up the school's financials.

I'm a Workshop Director this year — any advice on how to build up our chapter and close the gap with stronger programs? Also anyways to help students find opportunities to get on stage. I'm nervous since I dont really know much about DECA myself.

PROMPT:
Evaluate whether the Soviet occupation of Eastern Europe during the Cold War was motivated primarily by a desire to spread communism or by a desire to protect the Soviet Union.

Document 1 Source: Joseph Stalin, interview in Pravda, official Soviet newspaper, in response to Winston Churchill's "Iron Curtain" speech, 1946 Mr. Churchill strays near the truth when he speaks of the growth of the influence of Communist Parties in East Europe. One must note, however, that he is not entirely precise. The influence of the Communist Parties is growing not only in Eastern Europe but in almost all the countries of Europe in which fascism formerly held sway or where there was German or Italian occupation. The growth of the influence of the Communist Parties cannot be considered accidental. It is a completely regular phenomenon. The influence of the Communist Parties is growing because in the worst years of fascist domination in Europe the Communists seemed to be trustworthy, brave, self-sacrificing fighters against the fascist regime, for the freedom of the people. . . . Such are the laws of historical development.

Document 2 Source: Eugen Varga, Hungarian Communist, Democracy of a New Type, 1947 The rise of the states of new democracy [in Eastern Europe] shows clearly that it is possible to have political rule by the working people even while the outward forms of parliamentary democracy are still maintained. It is equally understandable that these countries maintain close, friendly relations with the Soviet Union. This is so not only because it was precisely the victorious troops of the Soviet Union that liberated their countries (Yugoslavia being, in part, an exception) from German occupation, and not only because they are all Slav states, but primarily because the present social order brings them close to the Soviet Union, because of all the great powers the Soviet Union alone is interested in the maintenance and further progressive development of the social order and political regime existing in these countries and can afford them diplomatic support against the reactionary offensive from outside. The Soviet Union is at the same time interested in the maintenance by these countries of the existing regime and their further development in a progressive direction. The present regime in these countries provides the guarantee that they will not, in the future, again voluntarily serve as forward positions for any power which tries to attack the Soviet Union

Document 3 Source: East German poster, 1950 [Image: A pair of hands, labeled "BÖRSEN BERICHT" (Stock Market Report) and holding a brush, sweeps away various crumpled pieces of paper labeled with terms like "NATO," "KRIEGS PAK" (War Pact), "Ordnung" (Order), "KRUPP AKTIEN" (Krupp Shares), and "Hitlergut" (Hitler's good/property), all of which appear to be trash. Caption at the bottom reads: "Weg mit dem Dreck! Um Deutschlands Einheit zu erreichen, müssen Krupp und Adenauer weichen!"] Translation of caption: "Out with the trash! To strengthen German unity, Krupp and Adenauer must go!"The Krupp corporation was a major German arms manufacturer that had produced weapons for the Nazi regime. Konrad Adenauer was the first leader of West Germany, who took office in 1949.

Document 4 Source: "Atomic Diplomat," Soviet poster, early 1950s [Image: A caricature of a Western diplomat, with a long nose and glasses, is shown holding a large bomb shaped like a briefcase. A tag on the tip of the bomb reads "ЗАРЯЖЕН В НАТО" (Armed by NATO). The diplomat's clothing appears to be a formal suit. Text at the top: "Дипломатомщики и др." (Diplomat-mongers and others.) Text at the bottom: "КАРИКАТУРЫ КУКРЫНИКСЫ" (Kukryniksy Caricatures)] The poster shows a caricature of a Western diplomat. The tag on the tip of his bomb/briefcase reads: "Armed by NATO."

Document 5 Source: Treaty among the Soviet Union and various Eastern European countries establishing the Warsaw Pact, 1955 The Contracting Parties have agreed to establish a Joint Command of the armed forces that by agreement among the Parties shall be assigned to the Command, which shall function on the basis of jointly defined principles. They shall also take other concerted measures necessary to strengthen their defensive power, in order to protect the peaceful labors of their peoples, guarantee the inviolability of their frontiers and territories, and provide defense against possible aggression.

Document 6 Source: Statement read over Soviet radio regarding an anticommunist revolt in Hungary, 1956 The defense of socialist achievements by the people's democracy of Hungary is at the present moment the chief and sacred duty of workers, peasants, and intelligentsia, and of all the Hungarian working people. The Soviet government expresses confidence that the peoples of the socialist countries will not permit foreign and internal reactionary forces to undermine the basis of the people's democratic regimes, won and consolidated by the heroic struggle and toil of the workers, peasants, and intelligentsia of each country.

Document 7 Source: Sergei Kovalev, "The International Obligations of Socialist Countries," article in Pravda, outlining what became known as the Brezhnev doctrine, after the Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev, 1968. In connection with the events in Czechoslovakia* the question of the interdependence of the national interests of the socialist countries and their international duties acquire particular importance. The measures taken by the Soviet Union, jointly with other socialist countries, in defending the socialist gains of the Czechoslovak people are of great significance for strengthening the socialist community, which is the main achievement of the international working class. We cannot ignore the assertions, held in some places, that the actions of the socialist countries [by intervening in Czechoslavakia] run counter to the Marxist- Leninist principle of sovereignty and the rights of nations to self- determination. The peoples of the socialist countries and Communist parties certainly do have and should have freedom for determining the ways of advance of their respective countries. However, none of their decisions should damage either socialism in their country or the fundamental interests of other socialist countries, and the whole working-class movement, which is working for socialism. This means that each Communist party is responsible not only to its own people, but also to all the socialist countries, to the entire Communist movement. *A reference to the Soviet military intervention against the reformist socialist Czech government of Alexander Dubcek.

WHAT I WROTE: After World War I, expenses were targeted toward Germany through the Treaty of Versalies, which caused them to retaliate. In World War II, Germany became a powerful in obtaining much land until the war ended in the mid 20th century.

Although some historians may argue that since the Soviet Union was interested in changing regimes and progressively directing, the occupation of Eastern Europe may have been motivated by a desire to protect the Soviet Union. However, because of fears from WWI and an inclination to gain more power, the soviet occupation of Eastern Europe during the Cold War was motivated by a desire to spread communism.

The Soviet Union's fears of WWI motivated the occupation of Eastern Europe. Varga, a Hungarian Communist, noted that the Soviet Union was interested in developing greater order to support its defense against the offense (Doc 2). This article was written for a communist audience to support their beliefs in communism. Therefore, this supports the idea of maintaining order after WWI because of German occupation and beyond. In addition, Stalin responds to Churchill's speech to explain the reason why the communist party is growing in Eastern Europe. He notes that the spread of communism comes from the occupation of fascist countries like Germany. This demonstrates some outcomes from WWI, like retaliation, that caused the rise of communism. Therefore, their purpose in the regime was to guarantee their safety with the use of communism, which they desired to spread and practice (*Doc 1). In total, the soviet occupation of Eastern Europe resulted from the past and influenced the desire to use and spread communism.

The Inclination towards gaining power was a component of the desire to spread communism through the occupation of Eastern Europe. The Treaty among the Soviet Union and Eastern European countries decided to establish a Joint command which agreed to protect and defend (Doc 5). This pact displays the outcome of the occupation and describes the Soviet Union's purpose to strengthen its defense. The Soviet radio statement regarding anti-communist revolt displays their inclintivity of protecting communism from revolters to strengthen their country through the protection of their people through communism (Doc 6). Therefore, the treaty and radio statement provide proof of the Soviet Union's interest in power, therefore desire to spread communism.

All in all, the Soviet Union's occupation of Eastern Europe was motivated with a desire to spread communism as a way to gain power for their country and as a result of fear from WWI, which was primarily fascism.
