I hold a Bachelor of Commerce & IT and have spent the last 2.5 years in Internal Audit at a big4 accounting. I know this isn’t long and I’m probably just weak af but this really isn’t for me. The nature of the work, the relationships, politics just everything.
I’m looking for a career that allows me to upskill, actually build something, and feel a sense of ownership over my work. I am fully prepared to take a pay cut and return to study for 1–2 years to make this happen.
I’ve been looking into BIM and considering a Diploma in Building Design to bridge the gap into the AEC industry.
My Questions:
The Pivot: Would I be "screwed" making this switch at this stage? I’m realistic about starting over as a junior and understand I am taking a pay cut and potential lower ceiling salary
Industry Insight: What is the current state of the market for BIM specialists, draftsmen, or designers as I will be entering at a junior level and what career pathways would this open to? Espec coming in as a junior with the whole AI scare. Is it a pathway for someone to transition into?
Alternative Paths: Given my background in IT and Audit, are there other sectors where I can "build and own" things that I might be overlooking? Would this be considered beneficial in the BIM pathway?
I’m very open to any advice or reality checks.
Thanks in advance. Oh and I’m currently 24 if that matters!
