Just got back from Kareri Lake Guide and wow… April was NOT what we expected.

We went in thinking it’d be a chill spring trek, but it turned into a full-on snow adventure. From a certain point after Kareri village, the trail was completely covered in snow. Not just patches - proper thick snow, sometimes knee-deep. Route finding got tricky since the usual trail markers were buried, and we had to rely on footprints and instinct.

A few things that stood out:

  • The climb got way more exhausting because of the snow + altitude combo
  • Slippery sections near the streams were sketchy without microspikes
  • Weather kept changing - sunny one minute, cloudy and cold the next
  • Nights were freezing, way colder than we had planned for

That said… it was insanely beautiful. The whole landscape looked like something out of a postcard - snow-covered forests, frozen sections near the lake, and barely any crowd. Felt raw and untouched.

Would I recommend it in April?
Only if you're prepared for snow trekking. Proper shoes, gaiters, maybe spikes, and definitely warm layers are a must. This is NOT a beginner-friendly “spring trek” at that time.

Curious if anyone else has done Kareri around April and had a similar experience? Or did we just hit an unusually snowy window?
