I'm looking for a book I read in middle/high school in the early 2000s. It is likely older than that. I checked it out from the school library.

A small town apple festival. I think the MC discovered that apple seeds are in the shape of a star when you cut an apple horizontally. This was somehow relevant to the plot. At the end they found some apple seeds hidden in the town hall or library. These were the apples the town used to be famous for. The variety might have had the word 'golden'.

There may also have been a weird shadow pregnancy sub plot similar to Melisandre in GoT, but more wholesome.
