Advice on upgrading phono preamp and adding subwoofer.
Hello. I made a post earlier this week on speaker upgrades. Based on the feedback from the community, I'm shifting my upgrade focus to a subwoofer and maybe a phono preamp.
Budget: $500 (could go to $600 if it would be a big difference maker.) I'm open to new or used equipment.
Location: United States (Minneapolis, MN)
Room Size: Length 23 feet, width 13 feet, Height 9 feet. I suppose I listen in the middle of the room, but it's not uncommon to listen while I'm in other rooms. The house is a pseudo open floor plan and music carries fairly well throughout most of the house.
Speaker orientation: Can be on top or on any shelf of two, six foot tall bookshelves that are against the 13 foot wall facing the length of the room. Speakers are separated by about 10 feet. If it matters, these are unique bookshelves that have 14 inches of separation on each shelf level and the shelf has no sides.
My current set up:
Turntable: Denon DP-300F
Cartridge: Ortofon Blue
Receiver: Onkyo TX-8020
PreAmp: ART DJPRE II
Speakers: Polk Monitor tx20 speakers (Because of how the room is currently used with a piano, furniture, bookshelves, and its layout, I can't switch to tower speakers).
I listen to a lot of records. 75% of what I listen to is punk and hardcore (loud and fast). The other 25% is a mixed variety, mostly rock and related genres.
Based on my system and listening habits, would you recommend any sub/preamp combo? Or would you recommend a different upgrade path altogether?
I appreciate any advice you can offer.
