This whole conundrum is for a presumably, golden pathos, from the clearance section of lowes

Questions from the rant summerized if you don't want to read:

  1. Is that deadish, peelable looking stuff the dead leaves I cut off were coming from supposed to be left alone, or can I take it off? There seems to be green stem underneath some portions

  2. Is it overcrowded? I don't know if this is just one big plant shooting from multiple spots or seperate plants, super tangled.

3.any specific needs soil wise if I'm keeping indoor? (I'll transfer it to a bigger pot of course)

So I decided after an hour of YouTube id be the clearance sections advocate and save a plant on deaths brink, so I grabbed the worst one that in my uneducated opinion, had promise, and now as I bring it home I realize, "I have no clue what to do, and what hurts the plant" so, I come to here for help, any information is good information, even if I already know it, hearing again wouldnt be bad at all, I THINK it's overcrowded? And the leaves seems less like stems and more like a flap that turns into a leaf, which completely blindsided me, and I have no idea how close up to the stem I should prune these flaps.

and then it's almost like it's wrapped around the stem, not part of it, because some portion of it (see the image) feels like it's very peelable, and loosely attached if attached at all, I'm not sure if ripping that excess off would harm the plant, so I've refrained, sticking to cutting the dead leaves off for now until further information.

Any help bringing this thing back to health would be appreciated, I'm interested in propagating too so once I'm out of crisis of it being unhealthy any info on that would be nice too!

Sorry for the long post, I bit off more than I could chew 😅
