I took a gig in January to be the singer of this band and it has been fun but the guys insist on saying I need to sing the songs like the original vocalist (there was one before him, but that era is not really remembered as well). What pisses me off though is the fact that I KNOW I'm MUCH better than the original vocalists by miles but they consistently talk about the guy. I do have struggles, don't get me wrong, I struggle with timing for the most part and remembering lyrics, but the problem is is that this band has been around for at least 20 years as a local band and their quality of work (in my opinion) has been held back by subpar vocals and a lack of creative evolution. I like some of the songs but the way the vocals are delivered in this songs really turns me off and I feel as if I have to limit myself to sing these songs.
The major problem though, is them saying I need to sing it like the original guy. It's hard enough to get chosen for a gig in an already established band but to limit my abilities to sound like the monotonous bullshit they present vocally in the songs is something I can just not do.
Everyone in my town has said they suck and need a whole new direction, but I'm totally struggling with everything. I know I sound fucking killer, that's not the problem. The problem is the continuous comparisons, timing, and memory regarding lyrics.
