Nurses that are just there for a paycheck
Anyone else working as a phleb in a hospital constantly have to deal with nurses who just don’t gaf? Last night, I had a pt with an order for blood cultures, but he already had some collected about 4 hrs prior. I asked the nurse, and she said they were already resulted and “yeah, he has LOTS of bacteria”. Keep in mind this pt was at risk of sepsis. Now I’m just a phlebotomist but I’ve NEVER seen bacteria grow in blood cultures in 4 hours (that’s being generous and not including specimen processing and received time). But I know if I explained that to the nurse, she wouldn’t care because she is always fibbing about small stuff instead of being open to learn something she doesn’t know. I’ve had several instances with this specific nurse, and I try to give them the benefit of the doubt, but it’s exhausting working with these types of people, especially when im working my ass off to get into nursing school all while making less than half what they do.
