My dog was hit by a car a couple of days ago and severely injured. Her back right hip was dislocated, her left ankle is broken and there is a lot of tendon damage and her whole rear end was degloved (the skin was not visibly damaged in the outside but the inside was separated from the muscle and fat tissue). Right now we are waiting to hear if she will even survive the skin damage. We decided to go through with the other surgeries to pop back in her hip, which was successful, and bandage her ankle. The vet said after the surgery that the ankle is worse then they thought and an amputation down the road is very likely.
The risk of her hip popping back out is around 50% which would mean she would need a hip replacement. That puts her at an amputation and a hip replacement. Best case scenario for her is 4 months of complete cage rest, lots of rehab and both her legs survive. Worse case scenario is she loses her leg and needs her remaining leg’s hip replaced. The vet couldn’t even tell us what that would look like as they don’t do that procedure there, but I can imagine it would be terrible on her.
She is a 70 pound, high energy German Shepard. She would require my care 24/7 which I will absolutely do, but I am so afraid that I will fail her and her hip will pop out and the surgery will be inevitable. She also has to be sedated every day for the next 3-4 weeks just to change her bandages.
I am at such a loss. She is my baby and I would do anything for her but I don’t want her to live a life of pain and surgeries, especially if the odds of her having to be put down in the future are high.
I know at the end of the day it is our decision on whether or not to put her down, but I am hoping there are similar stories out there or success stories with this sever of car accident trauma.
