Hi, I have a question about choosing the right key for my voice.

I feel like my voice is naturally on the deeper side, but when I try to sing certain songs (especially rock), the original key feels too low for me in the verses. It becomes uncomfortable and hard to support.

When I raise the key by around 3–4 semitones, everything feels much better. The low parts become easier, and I still have enough range to sing the higher parts without strain.

In some cases, I even need to raise it up to 5–6 semitones, which feels like a lot, but that’s actually where my voice feels the most comfortable.

What confuses me is that I don’t usually see other vocalists needing to raise songs this much, or having to play guitar so high up the neck just to match their voice.

Is this normal?

Why would someone with a deeper voice feel more comfortable singing in a higher key?

Am I misunderstanding my voice type, or could this be a technique issue?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

I have what I perceive as a deep voice (I’ve been told I might be a bass, but I don’t have any formal training). My natural speaking/singing voice (where I feel comfortable) sits on the lower side, but it’s not very powerful there.

I enjoy playing guitar and singing, and what I like the most is singing songs by a mexican rock band named PXNDX (Panda), where the vocalist is José Madero, as well as his solo work (acoustic). He has a relatively high and powerful voice, which makes me wonder if part of the issue is simply that my voice doesn’t naturally match his.

I’ve noticed something that feels a bit contradictory. I often need to transpose songs up to feel comfortable.

Intuitively, I would expect the opposite, since I have a deeper voice, I thought I’d need to lower songs. But that’s not what happens.

My theory is that even though my voice is deep, I’m actually quite close to my lower limit when I sing in the original key, so I don’t have much room to go further down.

When I raise the key, my voice gains more volume and presence, and feels easier to project. However, it also feels less grounded or supported when handling it, compared to when I sing in what feels like my natural low range. (even though that range lacks power).

More specifically, when José Madero sings in what seems to be his natural range, I can follow along in the same key, but my voice naturally sits lower and feels closer to my lower limit. Because of that, when he goes further down, I start to struggle and lose strength, while he still sounds supported.

When I transpose the song up, those lower notes shift into a more comfortable part of my range. It feels like I’m “creating space below,” which allows me to reach those notes with more stability and power. The trade-off is that the higher notes push me out of my natural low voice and into a lighter or less natural coordination, but overall it still feels easier than trying to handle the low end in the original key.

PXNDX songs are tuned half a step down. I can sing some of them in the original key, but it feels forced and weak. I’m most comfortable when I raise them by 2 to even 6 semitones, depending on the song, but I feel like that might be too much and that I might be doing something wrong.

Is it normal to need to raise songs that much, even with a deeper voice?

Why does it vary so much from one song to another if they’re from the same band and tuning?

Could this be a technique issue (breath support, placement, etc.), or is it just my natural tessitura?

Is it possible that my voice type simply doesn’t match well with this kind of singer?

I’d really appreciate any technical insight or similar experiences 🙏

I uploaded a single video with video fragments (9 in total).

For them, I’ve included a YouTube link with a timestamp so you can hear the original version for comparison.
