Origins of a genre you like!
TLDR: I immediately got sidetracked in my attempt to complete today’s goal and promptly forgot about it😅
For today’s good vibrations challenge “learn about the origins of a genre you enjoy” since I was listening to sail north I figured let’s see the origins of Celtic shanty pop. Naturally made popular by social media, especially TikTok I figured I’d read up more on the original sea shanty origins and immediately Google ai popped up saying “The Irish Atlantic: In the 1800s, Liverpool became the hub of Atlantic trade, heavily influenced by Irish labor. Sailors from Ireland merged their traditional folk melodies with work songs from other cultures (especially African American, Caribbean, and British).” and I was gone.
I completely forgot my current task and immediately googled how the Liverpudlian accent was influenced by the Irish.
My dad’s side of the family is from Liverpool and despite many people in the uk hating the accent it feels like home to me and that got me thinking does it sound so unique because of Ireland.
That adventure took me to a website talking about how the Scouse accent and northern Irish Belfast accents pronounce certain sounds the same and pointing out a specific pronunciation of the “t” sound in words.
So naturally I started doing the accent saying words like tree and realised “oh yeah that is different Ive never noticed that before”
Aaaand I then went on to say my favourite line from the tv show Red Dwarf in the Scouse accent because once that vocal stim gets triggered theres no stopping it.
“Look I don't want any toast and he doesn't want any toast. In fact no one around here wants any toast. Not now not ever. NO TOAST.”
“How ‘bout a muffin?”
“Or muffins! We don't like muffins around here! We want no muffins, no toast, no teacakes, no buns, baps, baguettes or bagels, no croissants, no crumpets, no pancakes, no potato cakes and no hot-cross buns and DEFINITELY no smegging flapjacks!”
“Aahhh so you’re a waffle man!”
I then proceeded to forget about the reason I went to google in the first place by finishing my breakfast and turning on the game I was going to play today.
So what I’ve learned about the origins of Celtic shanty pop is that no one wants any toast 😅
So if you’ve read this far and have some fun or interesting facts about your favourite genre drop a comment I’d be happy to read about it!
