Hi everyone!
I recently recovered this beautiful Omega Constellation Pie-pan that has been sitting in storage for quite some time. I’m planning to give it a proper "overhaul" to bring it back to its former glory, but I want to stay as faithful to its history as possible.
Technical Details:
Case: "Dog-leg" lugs with the observatory medallion. I suspect it’s a Ref. 168.005.
Movement: It’s a non-quickset date (Cal. 561, I presume).
The Dial: Golden Pie-pan. One of the black inserts from the hour markers has detached and is currently loose inside the crystal (you can see it in the photos).
The Crown: It is signed Omega but it’s fluted/round, not the 10-sided decagonal version.
My Restoration Plan:
Full Mechanical Service: It needs a professional CLA (Clean, Lubricate, Adjust) since it hasn’t run in years.
Dial Repair: I need to have the black marker insert re-attached.
No Polishing: I want to keep the case exactly as it is. I prefer the original scratches over losing the sharp edges of the dog-leg lugs.
New Shoes: I’m planning to ditch the current mesh bracelet (which seems aftermarket) and get a few high-quality leather straps to rotate.
My Questions for the Experts:
Does the round crown suggest a service replacement, or did some early 60s dog-legs come with this style?
Regarding the loose marker: Is this a common/easy fix for a specialized vintage watchmaker? I want to make sure the dial doesn't get scratched further.
Any specific leather strap recommendations that would look period-correct for a gold Constellation?
I'm excited to get this piece back on the wrist! Any insights or warnings before I send it to the watchmaker would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
