Hi everyone,

I’m hoping to get some advice from anyone who’s been through the 482/186 sponsorship pathway as a cook or chef in Australia.

My current situation:

I have Cert III

Around 3 years’ experience working as a cook at one workplace (worked as casual)

I’m now moving to a new employer who is willing to sponsor me for a 482, and they’ve also said they may consider even 186 if eligible prior 482 if that is not required

I’m a bit confused about the best pathway here.

My questions:

Is direct 186 realistically possible in my situation, or is 482 usually the better/more practical first step?

Does my 3 years of casual experience count toward eligibility, or does it need to be permanent/full-time?

Since I’m moving to a new workplace for sponsorship as a chef, would that affect my chances for direct entry 186?

For people in similar hospitality/cook-to-chef sponsorship situations, what pathway worked best for you?

I’d really appreciate any advice, personal experiences, or things to watch out for before committing.

Thank You
