You are probably going, “well obviously” and that true, most people would agree. No one likes Burmese python, Asian carp or wild pigs enough to defend them. But some of those people will change their tune with other invasive animals like cats, even though they are one of the worst. As they are known for their devastating impact on biodiversity, having contributed to the extinction of at least 63 species globally, particularly on islands. Another one is horses, they aren’t native to Australia but I’ve seen people try to die on their hill defending brumbies even though they are doing a lot of damage in their environment. Even in North America where their “native” there not, wild horses are a Eurasian species and they do damage areas in the us and I personally think the The Wild Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971 should be revised. They don’t have to be domestic animals either, California made hunting mute swans legal but animal welfare advocates were trying to defend them even though Mute swans are known to be aggressive and actively attack other birds, including native trumpeter swans and other native waterfowl, destroying their nests and killing their young. The most recent example is the cocaine hippos in Colombia as their population is getting to high dispite previous efforts in non lethal means like birth control, but again animals welfare say it’s cruel. You know what else is cruel displacing native species like manatees and turtles while causing water pollution, fuck them I guess. Luckily I think so rich guys from India is trying to save them for there own private zoo, which is ironic when you realize how hippos become invasive in Columbia in the first place but hopefully it goes well and they don’t have to die. That being said a lot of people will make excuses if their favorite non-native animal causes problems and animals welfare activists have a good heart but fail to see the bigger picture and I feel like I need to point this out. Yes I get that some people object to the idea of killing but sometimes that’s the best option and I’ll rather kill a few invasive animals to save a population of native animals.
