41 weeks and 1.5 cm dilated [bc]

Hi everyone,

Looking for some advice/reassurance from people who may have gone through something similar. My wife is 41 weeks today with our first baby and has basically been in prolonged early labor for around 45 hours now. About 45 hours ago she was 0 cm dilated, then around 20 hours ago she was 1 cm, and about 8 hours ago she was 1.5 cm dilated and 50% effaced with a softened cervix. She also lost what looked like her mucus plug last night. Her water still hasn’t broken.

The hard part is that she has been having extremely painful contractions this whole time, including multiple stretches where they were following a pretty consistent 5-1-1 pattern. She has barely been able to sleep because contractions keep waking her up. She has now had morphine/Gravol twice for therapeutic rest. The first time she got about 3-4 hours of sleep, but the second time didn’t really help her sleep much.

Doctors don’t seem overly concerned because baby is doing fine and she is technically still in early labor, but as her partner I’m getting worried about the exhaustion and sleep deprivation before active labor even starts. We do already have an induction booked for Friday at 41+3, but we’re wondering whether this sounds like something people have experienced before and whether anyone ended up getting induced earlier because of exhaustion/prolonged latent labor.

Would really appreciate hearing other people’s experiences because this has been mentally and physically brutal for her.
