Do I really need that much bleach?

I have a 35,000 gal pool. After reading here and studying everything I could find online, I’ve resigned myself to the idea that liquid chlorine bleach is the best way to keep levels without accumulating CYA.

It seems like I need about a gallon of bleach a day to keep my levels good. But that just seems like so much? I have shelves filled with bleach and I buy 12 gallons at a time from Costco. The cost adds up too. I just need a sanity check. Is this normal?

Update: I have learned that I need to go salt water! Now I just need to figure out how to do that. Thanks everyone.
