A world map I've been reworking of my fantasy world of Erda, used for D&D/ writing. Any feedback appreciated as I'm trying to get better at map design, as are any questions about the world (under the old 'if I don't know, I'll have to build an answer' principle).
Image Context: Erda is a flat discworld of small continents, with this map showing significant settlements, major rivers and islands, etc.
Some context for Sunlador (the 'focus' continent at the moment) -
- Elaryni Empire: Former rulers of Sunlador, now reduced to a rump state on the Eastern Coast where, generations ago, the elven fleet first landed after sailing out of the east. The Elaryni are, despite the name, mostly human, but elves and half-elves dominate the ruling class. Once the empire stretched all across Sunlador and even to Coigriela across the sea, but it's now a shadow of it's former glory after a disastrous war with the dwarven Sunken Realms turned into rebellion and internal collapse. Still a major world power and the seat of the Lion Throne of the Elven Empresses, but a shadow of its former glory. The Imperial Capital of Aelonyae is not only one of the busiest ports on the disc, but also the cultural and spiritual heart of the elven people - even those who no longer serve the empire.
- Ishkazain Sea: The Ishkazai steppe nomads never really bowed to the empire except when it benefited them - sometimes raiding caravans, sometimes trading goods, sometimes serving in the legions, sometimes harbouring fugitives. Particularly in the Western Marches around Tor Valan there's a long, complicated history of both bloodshed and mixed marriages, of constant war and cultural exchange.
- Ratha Plateau: The Ratha Plateau is a hard place, home to hard people who've hacked a life out of the frozen forests and bitter tundra. Ratha's a place where every village needs a palisade and a careful watch, for in the long nights evil things slip over the Guardian Mountains and stalk the land.
- League of Otheyae: A collection of independent city-states, since gaining their independence from the Elaryni Empire, the Free Cities have spent just as much time fighting each other and banding together for mutual benefit. Named after the concord signed at Otheyae, the 'Shattered City' - a fabulous metropolis built on a series of islands and sandbars, and the first among equals of the cities.
- Everwood: A seemingly endless forest bathed in magic, the first expeditions into the Everwood never reemerged. Bound to the forest in a way no outsider can understand, the people of the Woodland Realm care little for the world outside their forest or the will of their mysterious leaders, the King in the Green and the Queen of the Boughs. The Everwood is a mysterious, dangerous place where time runs differently, the laws of the physical world blur, and you're always one wrong step away from finding death at the point of an unseen arrow.
- Nine Sisters: Named after the nine colossal 'Swan Ships' that formed the heart of the elven migration fleet, the Nine Sisters island chain was handed over by imperial edict to the original sailing crews and their descendants. Now the islands are where the nomadic Clan Fleets of the Sea Elves make port, carrying back wonders from across the disc during their never-ending voyages.
- Shield Isles: The only part of Sunlador to have never bent the knee to the Elaryn, the Shield Isles are home to Saerborne people. Proud, stubborn, and ferociously independent, the Saer have resisted all attempts at annexation and made a name for themselves as raiders, pillagers and even slavers all along the Western Coast and beyond.
