ELI5: Why is it so common to refer to the abdomen as the stomach?
Like I understand saying “my stomach hurts” as an easy way of describing abdominal pain (even if the pain is more intestinal), but I always see things like “punched in the stomach” when it was the abdomen, or even a news article that said someone got “shot in the stomach” when it was the lower abdomen. Like if someone got punched in the chest we wouldn’t say they got punched in the heart.
Is this just colloquial shorthand? Or are there people who truly don’t realize that the stomach is a specific organ inside the abdomen?
