In ontario, a 30 minute break (paid or unpaid) is required if the employee works more than 5 consecutive hours. From what I can find, nothing is stopping an employer from scheduling 2 shifts, with a "gap" between, that totals well above 5h but does not provide any break.
Ex. An 800-1230, AND a 1245-1700. Most would consider this an 8.75h shift with a 15 minute break. But what's stopping an employer from stating it's two separate shifts and therefor doesn't require a full 30 minute break?
