If you’re thinking about leaving, make a good plan, and go for it
I remember a year and a half ago, like many others in my TS cohort, we all realized that we went to school to pursue engineering, and post grad we had become glorified tech service.
I’ve kept in touch with many of the class of TS on my team and now all 12 of us have moved on to an actual engineering pathway.
The two most popular ways to pivot back was
- Applying really hard and networking while working at Epic to people in actual engineering disciplines. (In this market you NEED referrals)
- Doing the MS internship/co-op to full time pipeline. (I did the MS strategy to pursue the field I want, and it’s now working out well, also in my opinion more reliable but obviously you’ll need to be willing to pay for an MS)
I am not making this post to gloat and say I made it out, I am just here because I saw this subreddit pop up again and realized it would’ve been helpful to see more posts showing that it is definitely possible to pivot back into engineering after working at Epic.
