Vehicle positioning for compliant stops/RTCs

Recently had this debate with a colleague regarding the correct positioning for pulling over vehicles.

I like to position myself as close to the subject vehicles rear bumper as possible, and roughly line up the centre of my car to the right hand side of the subject, wheels full offside lock, to create a bit of a safety zone if I have to approach the drivers side or get them out of the vehicle.

Colleague positions far back and in-line wheels turned to the curb, anticipating a rear shunt, and arguing its safer as your never in front of any vehicle.

Oddly enough, we were never taught where to position for stops and RTCs, its just one of them things your left to figure out.

What is the safest way to park up when doing this?
