Wooden and Banister - Stairs

Just moved into a place with this old wooden stair banister and it’s looking pretty tired in spots — patchy finish, dull areas, a few darker marks etc. Structurally it’s solid, just cosmetically a bit sad.

I’m not trying to do a full pro-level restoration, just want to freshen it up so it looks clean and cared for again.

I was thinking maybe:

•	light sand

•	wood stain if needed

•	satin varnish / hardwax oil?

But I’ve never done bannisters before so not sure what the least painful DIY route is. Also wondering:

•	do I need to strip the old finish completely?

•	best way to deal with the darker worn patches?

•	oil vs varnish for something people touch constantly?

•	any beginner mistakes to avoid?
