When people talk about home improvement, they usually think about the big stuff: water heaters, HVAC systems, toilets, drains, fixtures, tile, paint, etc.

But one of the easiest upgrades in the house is also one of the most ignored:

the shower head

Over time, shower heads can build up:

  • Mineral scale
  • Sediment
  • Biofilm
  • Buildup inside the spray nozzles
  • Hard water deposits that restrict flow

That buildup can affect both water pressure and spray pattern. In some homes, especially older homes or homes with hard water, the shower head may be the reason the shower feels weaker than it should.

A few signs it may be time to clean or replace yours:

  • Weak or uneven spray
  • Water spraying sideways
  • White/crusty buildup on the nozzles
  • Pressure feels worse than it used to
  • You have cleaned it before, but the issue keeps coming back
  • The fixture is 5–10+ years old

Before replacing it, try the simple fix first: remove the shower head, soak it in white vinegar, scrub the nozzles, rinse it out, and reinstall it.

If it is still clogged, corroded, leaking, or not flowing well after that, replacement may be the better option.

Newer WaterSense shower heads can also reduce water usage while still maintaining decent pressure, which can help lower hot water use in homes where multiple people shower every day.

For a basic DIY upgrade, this is usually a quick 10–15 minute swap with no demolition and minimal tools. Small improvement, but one you actually feel every day.

We work around plumbing and HVAC issues in Georgia and see small things like this get ignored all the time. Not an emergency item, but definitely worth checking.
