Fantasy book that begins with boys having to hunt in the woods to become men

I’m trying to remember a book I started but didn’t finish. The beginning of the book follows a group of boys preparing for a coming of age ceremony where they have to hunt in to forest for the biggest predator they can find. During the ceremony the main characters group camp in a cave and end up having to kill a bear that wanders in. Eventually another group of boys find them and steal there bear pelt after ambushing them to cheat. However the main group eventually encounter some monsters (ogres?) and the main character does some magic and kills one of them. They return with the ogres head and the adults are freaked out because they didn’t think the ogres where in there lands. That’s all I really remember.

I was laid off from my old job recently and won't be starting my new job for a few months. I've decided to take an approximately month-long road trip to visit some friends while my severance is still coming in and I have no responsibilities. I have friends to visit along the way in Joshua Tree CA, Tulsa OK, Louisville KY, Salida CO, and Idaho. I'd love anybody's recommendations for things to see along the way. I know CA, CO, ID, and UT pretty well, but almost nothing about Arizona, New Mexico, and all the states east of Colorado. Give me your best bars, hikes, restaurants, roadside attractions, gas stations, hotels, viewpoints, bathrooms, etc.

  10. Nashville, TN > Mammoth caves, KY (camping)
  11. Mammoth Caves, KY > Louisville, KY (staying with a friend for 2/3 nights)

  13. Kansas City, MO > Hays?, KS(recs for where to stay in Kansas?)

  15. Colorado Springs, CO > Salida, CO (staying with friends for 4/5 days)
