Is it worth going for super cheap VPS or should I just wait and spend more later?

I’ve been trying to move away from platforms like Vercel/Netlify and get more hands-on with my own setup (mostly small projects, APIs, and some basic full-stack stuff). Nothing huge yet, but I do want something I can actually learn on without constantly fighting limitations

The thing I keep running into is pricing vs expectations. On one hand, there are cheap VPS options in the 4-10 bucks range, but a lot of people say they’re oversold, unstable, or just not worth the hassle. On the other hand, going straight to something like DigitalOcean/Linode feels a bit expensive for projects that aren’t even generating anything yet

I actually tried a low-cost VPS recently, mostly just to see what I can realistically get at that price point. It wasn’t perfect, setup took a bit more effort than I expected, and you definitely need to be comfortable managing things yourself. But once everything was configured, it was stable enough for small apps and basic backend work

So now I’m kind of stuck between two approaches:

start cheap and upgrade later or skip the budget segment entirely and go for something more reliable from the start

For those who’ve already gone through this stage, did you regret starting with cheaper VPS providers, or is it actually a good way to learn before scaling up?
